Exercise for Heart Patients – Essential for Cardiac Rehabilitation

Most people know that exercise can be very effective in prevention of cardiovascular disease. But, did you know that it is also extremely beneficial for prevention of coronary heart disease complications for people who have suffered from congestive heart failure / heart attack in the past or have other heart-related ailments?

It is not uncommon for people suffering from heart disease to fear exercise – especially cardiovascular exercise. We at IPC Heart Care Centre would like to tell you that there is no need to fear exercise. In fact, exercise can help you heal your heart. However, for patients of heart disease, exercise has to be done under proper medical supervision. Patients are most often given a blanket statement like “Walk for half an hour every day.” This leaves them unsure and confused. For safety as well as optimal benefits, a case-specific cardiac rehabilitation programme must be drawn up, and proper cardiac rehabilitation guidelines must be followed.

Exercise forms a cardinal part of IPC Heart Care Centre’s cardiac rehabilitation programme. We have trained doctors and other professional staff at all our branches, and strictly follow cardiac rehabilitation guidelines. Our doctors first look at a patient’s medical history, and then they carry out the necessary simple tests to evaluate the level of blood supply and some other essential factors. They thus determine the safe speed, duration and frequency for the patient to walk, so as to prevent an attack of angina or a heart attack. The doctors who form part of IPC’s Cardiac Rehabilitation department literally teach you how to exercise. They teach you how to warm up, maintain ideal speed and then cool down, in a manner that is considered safe and beneficial for your specific medical state. They are right by your side, monitoring you and supporting you, while you exercise on the equipment at our centre—for months even, if that’s what it takes to get you confident enough to start exercising on your own.

At IPC, we have treated over 30,000 patients who have chosen EECP over surgery, because they wanted a non-invasive option after recovering from congestive heart failure or being diagnosed with arterial blockages. We put patients of EECP also onto our cardiac rehabilitation programme.

We would like to emphasise however, that not every patient of congestive heart failure or coronary artery disease can exercise. Although most would be medically advised to do some level of cardiovascular exercise, some would definitely be advised not to exercise.

If you are a patient of heart disease, please feel free to visit any of IPC’s centres for an assessment and counselling on exactly what kind of intensity of exercise is ideal for your condition. It doesn’t matter even if you are currently on some congestive heart failure treatment or other heart treatment – the doctors at IPC are professional cardiac rehabilitation therapists who adhere to international protocols as followed by renowned cardiac care institutions the world over.
